Famed sex shop Babeland opened its doors in Seattle this year and began selling the Rabbit Pearl from the very beginning, says store co-founder Claire Cavanah. In 1997, the store opened its New York City location and began offering the next model of the toy, the Rabbit Habit, which had its battery pack and controls in the base of the toy, rather than a separate attachment. This was kind of a big deal when you think about how annoying it would be to have a cord flapping around—and potentially getting tangled—while you're trying to get yourself off.

Rabbit hits the Bigtime: 1998

Wanting to tie-in some kind of vibrator in an upcoming episode of Sex and the City, representatives from HBO visited The Pleasure Chest in New York City to find out what the store's best-selling vibrator was. They were told, the Rabbit Pearl, obviously, and soon the teams at HBO and Vibratex connected. HBO sent Vibratex the script for the episode to make sure the toy was depicted properly. In "The Turtle and the Hare," which first aired on August 2, Miranda lends Charlotte her Rabbit, rendering Charlotte unwilling to leave the house. And thus, the Rabbit Pearl became as coveted as Carrie's Manolos.

You can't really have a conversation about Rabbit vibrators without some mention of Sex and the City, because the iconic sex toy made its debut in a 1998 episode, cleverly titled "The Turtle and the Hare." In it, Miranda initially suggests that Charlotte try a Rabbit vibrator, and Samantha quips, "Oh, come on. If you're going to get a vibrator, at least get one called the Horse." But the Rabbit ends up being so powerful that Carrie and Miranda have to literally drag Charlotte out of bed after she fell down the Rabbit hole, so to speak.

Martin says they received a letter from HBO asking if they could use their Rabbit Pearl in a scene and reassured them that the show would not use the Rabbit Pearl in a way that would reflect poorly on the product. Since Martin and her husband did not have HBO at the time, they didn't even see it when they aired. It wasn't until a retailer of theirs sent them a VHS tape of the episode so they could watch the famous episode.

After the Sex and the City girls introduced us to Jack Rabbit, the notorious vibrator, we had to see what the hype was about. After all, it worked so well that it made Charlotte—yes Charlotte, the romantic one of the group—give up men. Her ban may have only been temporary, but nonetheless, we were intrigued. We had two women try it, and got their—and their partner' s—opinions. Here's what they had to say.

Sales for sex toys during the 1980s weren't like they are today. Before the internet, the only way to buy sex toys was to go to an adult store, assuming your town had one, or know where to order one by mail. It wasn't impossible, and clearly, people used toys to get off. The popularity of vibrators and other sex toys really began to boom in the 1990s. After plenty of interviews and research, they settled on the Rabbit Pearl. Fans of the show will remember this as the vibrator that Miranda loaned to Charlotte who then refused to leave her room because she was blissed out on orgasms.

By 1999, other sex toy makers fell in love with the rabbit design and sales. New versions from other companies flew off the shelves. Around this time, online sex toy stores began to open. A-List Endorsement: 2006

In June 2006, the Rabbit Habit got the magic fairy dust of solidified success (i.e. Oprah's stamp of approval) when it was billed in O, The Oprah Magazine as the "Rolls Royce of sex toys." Baller.

Then-Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria further upped the Rabbit's cred by mentioning her love for the toy in a 2005 interview with SELF. "I give Rabbit vibrators to all my girlfriends," she had said. "They scream when they unwrap it. The best gift I can give them is an orgasm." (Her praise for the device boosted Babeland's sales of the toy alone 30 percent.)

Rabbit Fever, a little-known UK mockumentary, "followed" the lives of so-called Rabbit Addicts, as in women who found the world's best-selling vibe so addictive that they literally couldn't stop using it. Unfortunately, The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw gave the film one out of five stars, calling it "tacky and depressing," while the BBC found the depictions of female masturbation "embarrassingly inadequate." Kill the Rabbit: 2008

Alabama Attorney General Troy King announced that he was going to single-handedly enforce his state's "official" sex toy ban, which no doubt would have affected the Rabbit, the top-selling toy of the time. King, who's a Republican (surprise, surprise), believed that sex toys were immoral and it was his duty to arrest—yes, really—anyone who used them. In response, former Alabama gubernatorial candidate Loretta Nall started a counter-campaign called Toys for Troy, which encouraged women to mail their vibrators and dildos directly to the attorney general's office. In. Yo. Face.

Rabbits in the 21st Century

The girls in the City weren't the last the public would hear from their favourite stars about the joys of rabbit vibrators. Eva Longoria, while still a Desperate Housewife, stated in a 2005 interview that she liked to give all her girlfriends vibrators as gifts. She openly gushed about her love of the original Rabbit in particular. Oprah's iconic magazine, O, even named the Rabbit Habit the "Rolls Royce of sex toys" in 2006. By 2008, it was the highest-selling sex toy available, and in 2013, it was estimated that five million rabbit vibrators were sold in a year. Since 2009, rabbit-style vibrators are more widely available in different sizes for people who prefer something smaller and more discreet. Even though this is the 21st Century and shops like Jack and Jill should be free to sell vibrators, and whatever else a legal adult might enjoy, controversy still exists. In 2008, Alabama Attorney General Troy King decided he'd had enough of Alabamians getting themselves off. He declared a war on sex toys and said he would start enforcing a previously ignored law banning adult toys. He set his sights on the Rabbit. In a big F-you to the Attorney General, women in Alabama fought back. In a campaign called Toys for Troy, women were encouraged to send sex toys to the clearly-in-need-of-an-orgasm Attorney General King. As people in Alabama continue to buy sex toys today, it's safe to say that his short-sighted campaign failed.

Stylish sex toy company Jimmyjane added the "Iconic Rabbit" to its lineup of sleek sex toys, borrowing the original Vibratex design but manufacturing the toy all in white. This shiny new Rabbit became part of the company's "Usual Suspects" line, which features the best of the best from other sex companies but with Jimmyjane's elegant spin.

In 2015, CalExotics revamped the packaging of the Jack Rabbit so users can easily identify the different models. There was a starter, immediate, advanced, and pro levels.

Lisa Finn, Brand Manager for Babeland, says that the biggest updates she's seen to the Rabbit in the last five years can be seen through the materials and motor. It's becoming more and more common to see Rabbits coated in non-porous silky silicone. Newer rechargeable Rabbits are not only better for the environment and longevity of the toy, but also allow more functionality with the motor through thrusting, and G-spot "rocking" motions.

Rabbit: The Conclusion
